Jamie Murray Receives OBE

Jamie Murray has been awarded an OBE for his services to Tennis and charity. Murray started playing tennis as a 4-year old and turned professional at 18. Jamie made his first major breakthrough when aged 21 he won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title in 2007 with Jelena Jankovic, becoming the first Briton for 20 years to win a senior title at the tournament.

Jamie said topping the world rankings earlier this year was a major achievement and was the highlight of the past 12 months.

Del Potro Wins Stockholm Title

Juan Martin Del Potro has won the Stockholm Open and ended a 33 month drought by beating American Jack Sock in straight sets 7-5 6-1. He nows has won 19 tournaments in his career, his last title was in Sydney at the start of the 2014 season. It was a great week for Del Potro as he won the title without dropping a set and was just broken twice the entire week.

Kyle Edmund Loses In Antwerp Semi-Final

The British Number 2 Kyle Edmund has just missed out on his first ATP final as third seed Frenchman Richard Gasquet fought back to win their semi-final in Antwerp 3-6 7-5 6-2. Edmund led by a set and 4-2 but could not close out the match. On Monday he is still set to break into the top 40 in the world rankings for the first time.

This makes the Englishman along with Alexander Zverev from Germany and Australian Nick Kyrgios the only players aged 21 or under that are within the top 40 in the ATP world rankings.

Nick Kyrgios Banned For Eight Weeks

Nick Kyrgios has been banned for eight tournaments weeks and fined $25,000 for his recent behaviour during the Shanghai Masters last week. Kyrgios patted the ball over the net several times when serving in his straight sets defeat by Mischa Zverev. He also began walking back to his chair before Zverev serve had landed.

The world ranked number 14 said he will use this time off to improve on and off the court. Tennis Australia said Kyrgios has agreed to seek professional help and would continue to offer their full support.

Murray Into Shanghai Masters Final

Andy Murray is into the Shanghai Masters final and will play Roberto Bautista Agut tomorrow for the title. Murray stormed into his 10th final of the year with a straight sets victory against Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4 6-3.

While Bautista Agut the world number 19 shocked the world number one Novak Djokovic winning 6-4 6-4. If Murray wins the final he will be just 915 points behind Djokovic in the annual ranking points, increasing his chances of ending the year as world number one.

Andy Murray Seals Place in Cincinnati Semi-Finals

The number one seed Andy Murray is into the semi-finals in Cincinnati after beating Bernard Tomic in straight sets 6-4 6-4. The British number one, who secured his 600th ATP tour match victory earlier this week came through against Tomic despite looking a little heavy-legged at times. Murray will now face Milos Raonic, while in the other semi- final its Marin Cilic against unseeded Grigor Dimitrov.

Kerber Wins Australian Open Women’s Title

Angelique Kerber from Germany stunned Serena Williams the world number one to win the Australian Open Grand Slam title. Kerber the number seventh seed won the thrilling final in three sets 6-4 3-6 6-4. Its the first German to win a Grand Slam singles title since Steffi Graf at the French Open in 1999. This was Serena chance to tie Graf’s open- era record of 22 major titles.

 

Nadal Out Of Australian Open 2016

Rafael Nadal is out of the 2016 Australian Open losing his first round match to Fernando Verdasco in five sets. The match lasted over four hours and 40 minutes with Verdasco winning 7-6 4-6 3-6 7-6 6-2. This is Nadal first round exit at the Australian Open.

There was also a major shock in the women draw with the second seed Simona Halep being defeated in straight sets 6-4 6-3 by Chinese qualifier Zhang Shuai, ranked 133rd in the world. This was Zhang first victory in a Grand Slam at her 15th attempt.

Local crowd favourite Leyton Hewitt tennis farewell will have to wait at least another two days after the Australian journeyman beat fellow countryman James Duckworth 7-6 6-2 6-4. Hewitt now faces eighth seed David Ferrer in round two.
