Radwanska to strong for Heather Watson at Australian Open

British number 1 Heather Watson has been knocked out of the Australian Open by the forth seed from Poland Agnieszka Radwanka 6-3 6-1. British hopes are now with Andy Murray and Laura Robson. World number 1 Novak Djokovic was put through his paces by Radek Stepanek, winning three well fought sets 6-4 6-3 7-5. Next on the radar for Novak is American Sam Querrey or Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.

Murray into third round of Australian Open 2013

Andy Murray raced into the third round of the Australian Open in just 1 hour and 41 minutes with a win against Joao Sousa of Portugal  6-2 6-2 6-4. Murray now plays Ricardas Berankis who beat 25th seed Florian Mayer.         Roger Federer will now meet rising Australian star Bernard Tomic in round three. Federer beat Nikolay Davydenko 6-3 6-4 6-4 while Tomic won against Daniel Brands 6-7 7-5 7-6 7-6.

Djokovic Marches on at Australian Open

The current Australian Open Champion Novak Djokovic has secured his place in the third round with a comfortable win over Ryan Harrison of America 6-1 6-2 6-3. The world number one will now play Radek Stepanek who beat Feliciano Lopez. There were victories for Sharapova and Venus Williams who will now meet each other in round three. Venus defeated French player Alize Cornet 6-3 6-3, while Maria Sharapova had the same scoreline as her first round match with a 6-0 6-0 victory over Misaki Doi of Japan.

Laura Robson Into round two at Australian Open

There is two British female players into the second round of the Australian Open after Laura Robson put on a great performance to beat Melanie Oudin from America 6-2 6-3. Robson joins fellow Brit Heather Watson in round two and will play next Petra Kvitova who has a Wimbledon title to her name.

Andy Murray through to second round at Australian Open

The world number 3 Andy Murray spent less than 2 hours on court to defeat Dutchman Robin Haase in straight sets 6-3 6-1 6-3 in the first round of the Australian Open. Murray will now face Joao Sousa of Portugal in the second round. British number 2 Jamie Baker was defeated 7-6 7-5 6-2 by the man who beat Rafael Nadal last year at Wimbledon Lukas Rosol.

Australian Open 2013 Day 1 Round Up

The big names that are through on day 1 of the Australian Open are Novak Djokovic, Venus Williams, Janko Tipsarevic and Maria Sharapova. Djokovic was in good form defeating Frenchman Paul – Henri Mathieu 6-2 6-4 7-5. Maria Sharapova had a convincing win over Olga Puchkova 6-0 6-0. Tipsarevic beat local favourite Lleyton Hewitt in 3 straight sets 7-6 7-5 6-3. Venus Williams now 32 reached the 2nd round by thrashing Galina Voskoboeva 6-1 6-0, there could be a potential 3rd round clash against Sharapova. The 11th seed Juan Monaco became the only seed in the men’s draw to lose on day 1, going down to Andrey Kuznetsov 7-6 6-1 6-1.

 

FERRER AND HEWITT ON FORM BEFORE GRAND SLAM

Lleyton Hewitt and David Ferrer have continued there good run of form before the first Grand Slam of the year starting on monday. Hewitt defeated Juan Martin Del Potro 6-1 6-4 to claim the Kooyong Classic title in Melbourne. Ferrer has won his third successive title winning the Heineken Open in Auckland defeating German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the final 7-6 6-1.
